Photography

All of our photographers sell their prints as strictly limited editions. Prices are based on simple rules of scarcity of supply, thus smaller editions tend to be more expensive than larger ones and as an edition sells out prices tend to be raised. Editions among our artists vary in size from 3 to 50.

Photographic printing techniques

Palladium platinum - this is an expensive and time consuming process that produces images of stunning tonal range. Prints have an ethereal quality with incredible detail, enhanced by the way the chemicals soak into the fibres of the paper giving an image a 3 dimensionality. Platinum is also light fast thus not subject to any form of fading. James Sparshatt's platinum prints are produced by the Paul and Max Caffell of 31 Studio, the UK's leading exponents of this art.

Silver-gelatin handprints - this has been the standard for producing black and white prints for most of the 20th century. Extracting maximum detail and the correct balance in a photographic print is an artform in its own right with master printers often taking a lifetime to master their craft. Selenium toning is used to increase the stability of the chemicals and give the photographs a greater archival life.

Digital C-Type - a C-type is a chemical-process used to create colour prints and produces images of vibrant intensity. Digital C-types use the same developing process and paper as a traditional print but the paper is exposed by light from a digital source.
